Any person or individual, who have completed State approved Certified nursing assistant program is known as Certified Nurse Aide or Certified Nursing assistant (CNA).

The Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1987 (OBRA 1987) required states to initiate and maintain Nurse Aide Training, Competency Evaluation Test and Nurse Aide Registries to define training and evaluation standards for nurse aides who work in long term care units, hospitals and health care centers.

Their main function after completion of certified nursing training, is to assist patients with health care needs, offers bedside care and follows nursing procedures under the active supervision of License Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse. Nurse Aides are very important part of a health care team, which consists of many personnel outside nurses in any hospital or extended care facilities. It is the duty of the CNA Training information to offer routine care, so the Registered or Practical Nurses can provide care that can be performed by them only as outlined by each state’s Nurse Practice Act.

The basic duties of Certified Nursing Aides are as follows:

Duties and Responsibilities of CNA :

• Takes and records patient’s vital signs
• Gives enemas when needed
• Measures and records patient’s fluid intake and output
• Provides daily routine care such as bathing, dressing and feeding
• Assists patients in active and passive range of motion, transferring, walking and turning
• Cleans rooms and makes patient beds
• Answers patient’s calls
• Converses with patients to provide assurance
• Assists in care and feeding of infants
• Manages supply inventory and supply requisitions
• Observes Universal Precautions
• Ability to follow written Nursing Care Plan
• Provides patient transportation to doctor appointments, outside activities and shopping
• Provides patient laundry and linen changes
• Light housekeeping
• Provides medication reminders
• Provides medical follow up with exercise regime
• Meal preparation, and clean up

In addition a cna certification test should be compassionate and must have zeal to care for the patients.
