In the modern era, when colleges and institutes are expanding their campuses, a new style of education has emerged. It is called distance education or distance learning. The students, who opt for distance learning courses, are mostly working adults. The reason behind this is that they seek development in their present careers. Another reason is they want a change or shift in their careers.

Only distance learning can cater to their needs in terms of time, convenience and pace constraints. There are other groups of people such as, housewives and elderly or retired personnel who enroll in distance learning courses, the reason being the inability to reach the campus or age limitations. So students, who have not had the opportunity to continue their higher studies or those who had to leave studies for family or monetary issues, will now have the chance to study from home and make their dreams come true through distance learning.

With distance learning, anybody can access the education that he or she has always desired but never had the luck to obtain it. Not only that, distance learning has proved to be helpful to teachers or faculties who can communicate to the student or students at his/her convenience. Technologies like the internet and satellite television and teleconference are the means to communication between the teacher and the learner.

Students can read at his or her own sweet time and if a doubt occurs can contact the faculty at anytime via e-mail or chat or phone. A lot of time that could have been wasted in travelling the way to campus, is saved and can be utilized for other sensible things.

The phrase distance learning does not fit the mode of education it is associated with. Technical advancement and latest inventions in the field of telecommunication have enabled online universities and colleges to erase the word ‘distance’ from the dictionary. Distance does not matter any more. Anybody can register for online degrees irrespective of their location and can still get a real-life learning experience. Thus the word distance is used to highlight the fact that the learners and the teachers are located at various remote places, that’s it. Distance learning is no way different than traditional campus based learning in recent times.
